![]() What's With the Big Yellow Banner*?Since its launch in 2009, Standing on the Side of Love (SSL) has become a national presence in bringing our Unitarian Universalist (UU) values into the world. Through community activism, social networking, and media outreach, Standing on the Side of Love has equipped and mobilized people across the nation to counter fear with messages of love and compassion. With growing brand recognition and social networking engagement, Standing on the Side of Love is at the forefront of public debate. To harness love’s power to stop oppression, Standing on the Side of Love has engaged in issues of marriage equality, immigration reform, work for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights, solidarity with marginalized Muslim communities, and much more! Visit Standing on the Side of Love is an interfaith public advocacy campaign sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Association and all are welcome to join. Its goal is to elevate compassionate religious voices to influence public attitudes and public policy. The campaign's mission: No one should be dehumanized through acts of exclusion, oppression or violence because of their identity. Muslim is an identity. Immigrant is an identity. So is "poor," "disabled," "person of color," "mentally ill," "special needs." "Those people" is an identity; so is "them." Six words remind us to harness the power of love against hate and fear-mongering. It reminds to choose connection and compassion, not separation and alienation. It testifies that human beings are people, not categories or labels.
